They come from all fifty United States, the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, Department of Defense Schools in the Atlantic, and international schools in China, Korea, and elsewhere (NHD International). The excitement can be felt across the campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\">The 2026 National Contest<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p  class=\"appear-on-scroll has-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" ><strong>June 14\u201318, 2026<\/strong>, <strong>University of Maryland, College Park <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">The NHD National Contest kicks off with a Welcome Ceremony to greet students and celebrate their hard work. Students then compete over several days in preliminary and final rounds. Information about schedules, judging times\/locations, and campus logistics will be available when you check in. To avoid unnecessary hauling of exhibits or props around the building, DO NOT UNLOAD UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE CHECKED IN. The Union Lane Garage, across from the Stamp Student Union, will offer<strong><em>&nbsp;free temporary parking<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>on Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14. There is also free long-term parking in Lots 1 and Z, West of Stamp Student Union, on Saturday and Sunday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">Late arrivals for the Junior Division can check in from 8:00 \u2013 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15. Senior Division students can check in from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Monday and 8:00 \u2013 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Look for the Teacher Check In signage. It is separate from student check-in.<\/p>\n\n<h4  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\"><strong>Housing Check In<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">During the contest, housing check-in at Stamp Student Union, Colony Ballroom, will be available Saturday from 2:00\u20138:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. \u2013 8:00 p.m. After these times, the 24-hour housing check-in moves to Elkton Hall. You will receive your room assignment and meal card upon check-in.<strong><em>&nbsp;Please note:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;On-site NHD Registration and Housing Check-In are<strong>&nbsp;separate<\/strong>&nbsp;processes. Please follow the signs to the appropriate area.<\/p>\n\n<h4  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\"><strong>Late Housing Check In:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">If you arrive on campus after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, or anytime on Monday, you must go to Elkton to receive your room assignment and meal card. Please park here and walk your exhibits or props across Union Lane to the Stamp Student Union. You can store props in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nhd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2026-PG-Room-Hours.pdf\">Prince George\u2019s Room at the Stamp Student Union<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the exhibit\/prop is heavy, you can <strong>PAUSE<\/strong>&nbsp;your car on Union Lane and put your exhibits or props on the curb. You&nbsp;<strong>MAY NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;leave your car unattended on Union Lane.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a box truck, you can temporarily park in the Stamp Student Union loading dock (behind the building). However, you&nbsp;<strong>MAY NOT<\/strong>&nbsp;leave the truck unattended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you would like to drop your props off at your judging location on Monday or Tuesday, you may PAUSE your car near\/outside your judging building and unload the props onto the curb. For specific submission and preparation instructions, <a href=\"https:\/\/nhd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2026-Submission-Instructions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">please review&nbsp;this document<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">If you are in the Junior Division (grades 6\u20138), you will be judged on Monday, June 15, between 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you are in the Senior Division (grades 9\u201312), you will be judged on Tuesday, June 16, between 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">Documentary and Performance categories are the only categories where students need to be present for the finals round of judging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">For the Junior Division, documentary and performance finalists will be announced Monday evening. Junior Division finals judging will take place on Tuesday evening between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. For the Senior Division, documentary and performance finalists will be announced on Tuesday evening. Senior Division finals judging will take place on Wednesday morning between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. <strong>Please note:<\/strong> Exhibit, Paper, and Website categories will not be notified if their project advances to finals; therefore, they do not need to be present for the finals round.<\/p>\n\n<h2  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\">On-Campus Housing and Hotels<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">If you would still like to purchase on-campus housing, you may do so. This fee includes access to teacher resources, Monday night Teacher Social, Tuesday workshops, Smithsonian Institute or White House Historical Association showcases, and other teacher activities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Registrants who do not complete payment before the 11:59 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 19 deadline will face a $50 Late Fee. The late payment fee will increase to $60 on Thursday, May 21. If payment is not completed by Friday, May 22, the late fee will increase to $75. If you need to complete your payment after the May 19 deadline, you must contact the NHD National Office.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nhd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/National-Contest-Refund-Policy-2026.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nhd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/National-Contest-Refund-Policy-2026.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Refund Policy<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-heading\" ><span class=\"text\">Teachers<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers attending the contest must register and pay the $65 teacher registration fee. If you are not planning to attend the contest, please still register, but you do not need to pay the teacher registration fee. Teachers who register and pay the fee will receive access to the latest NHD digital resources, entrance to the Monday night Teacher Social, and access to the Tuesday teacher workshops. It is about a 30-minute drive (28.4 miles) from the University of Maryland, College Park.&nbsp;<br><strong>Public Transportation from BWI to College Park, MD:&nbsp;<\/strong>There is no longer a direct bus option between BWI and College Park. There is a MARC and Amtrak Station located at BWI. As there are frequent changes, construction, etc., please refer to their websites or Google Maps for the latest travel information.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport \u2014 DCA<\/strong><br>DCA is the closest airport option. It is about a 30-minute drive (17.8 miles) from the University of Maryland, College Park.&nbsp;<br><strong>Public Transportation from DCA to College Park, MD:<\/strong>&nbsp;The Washington Metro (subway) stops at DCA. Take the Yellow Line going toward Greenbelt and exit at College Park-UMD. The campus is located 1.5 miles from the Metrorail station. <br>The website for Washington&#8217;s Metrorail system has system maps and schedules.
