Teachers can be nominated by others or can nominate themselves, and after the open nomination period, affiliate nominee finalists will then be selected. Two national winners, one at the junior level and one at the senior level, will be selected and announced in June 2026. Each national winner will each receive $5,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\"><strong>Eligibility Criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">Eligible teachers must have students participating in the National History Day contest (at any level) during the 2026 competition season. Any teacher who meets the eligibility criteria may nominate themselves for consideration.<\/p>\n\n<ul  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-list\" >\n<li>2025 National History Day affiliate nominee finalists for the Teacher of the Year Award are <strong>not eligible<\/strong> to apply this year. Nominees from before 2025 may be considered (there must be at least one year between nominations as a finalist for a national award).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Past national-level Teacher of the Year, Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year, or MacGregor\/Harris Teacher of the Year winners are <strong>not eligible<\/strong> to be nominated.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All nominees need to be full-time teachers or librarians in a public, private, parochial, cyber, or homeschool setting. If a nominee resigns their position before the end of the 2025\/2026 academic year, they are ineligible to be considered for the national award.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\"><strong>The following evaluation criteria will be used during the selection process:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ol  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-list\" >\n<li>Dedication to the National History Day program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inclusion of project-based learning through the National History Day contest in the classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commitment to working with students on NHD projects over multiple years in an academic or extracurricular setting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assisting students to showcase work at local, affiliate, or national level(s). <em>Students do not need to advance to the national or affiliate levels for the teacher to be eligible<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting inspired and creative teaching methods regarding the instruction of history.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of primary sources in the classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementation of active learning strategies to engage students and promote historical thinking skills.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\"><strong>Nomination Process:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">Colleagues, students, parents, and others can nominate National History Day teachers for consideration. Teachers may also nominate themselves for consideration. <strong>The nomination form will be available<\/strong> <strong>until Monday, January 5, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-button\" ><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size has-custom-font-size wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/form.jotform.com\/242894556634166\"><span class=\"label\">access to the nomination form<\/span><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\"><em>The National History Day Teacher of the Year Award is replacing the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award.
