{"id":5145,"date":"2023-06-06T15:38:13","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T15:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nhd.org\/?p=5145"},"modified":"2023-06-08T11:35:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T11:35:42","slug":"language-showcase-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nhd.org\/en\/2023\/06\/06\/language-showcase-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"National History Day \u201cIn Language There Is Life: I ka \u2018\u014dlelo n\u014d ke ola\u201d Showcase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\"><strong>Highlights Historical Research Presented in \u02bb\u014clelo Hawai\u02bbi (Hawaiian) Language<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\"><div  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-button\" ><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"label\">DOWNLOAD A SHAREABLE COPY OF THIS PRESS RELEASE<\/span><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">June 8, 2023, College Park, Maryland\u2014<strong>National History Day\u00ae (NHD), <\/strong>with the support of the <strong>Smithsonian&#8217;s National Museum of the American Indian<\/strong> and the <strong>Hawai\u2018i Council for the Humanities<\/strong>, are pleased to announce the exhibition of six student historical research projects presented in \u02bb\u014dlelo Hawai\u02bbi (Hawaiian) language, to be featured in at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, June 13.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">In this special \u201cIn Language There Is Life: I ka \u2018\u014dlelo n\u014d ke ola\u201d Showcase, middle and high school students from Hawai\u2018i who completed a National History Day project in \u02bb\u014dlelo Hawai\u02bbi and qualified at the Hawai\u02bbi affiliate contest, were invited to Washington, D.C. to share their work with a national audience. These projects show perspectives and understanding vital to their culture and support larger community efforts that perpetuate and give life to indigenous languages. These student projects also reflect the 2023 NHD theme, <em>Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas<\/em>. This is the first live Language Revitalization Showcase and joins the roster of student websites, performances, papers, exhibits, and documentaries showcased in cultural institutions in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">\u201cWe are excited to share these NHD projects in \u02bb\u014dlelo Hawai\u02bbi with visitors at the National Museum of the American Indian,\u201d shares Executive Director Cathy Gorn. \u201cWe appreciate the collaborative effort to showcase the stellar work of these history students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">\u201cAll languages enact a worldview, and some stories and concepts can only be conveyed in the Hawaiian language. These student projects that utilize Hawaiian-language archives and sources are so special because they help us connect with and understand the nuances of the ways our ancestors understood the world. These stories have great wisdom for the present and future,\u201d shares Aiko Yamashiro, Executive Director of Hawai\u02bbi Council for the Humanities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll\">\u201cThis is such an exciting opportunity for our Hawaiian-language speaking youth to share their academic work in the language of Hawai\u02bbi with a broader audience. The National History Day Contest was established in 1974 and currently engages more than half a million students every year in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. Students present their research as a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website. Projects compete first at the local and affiliate levels, where the top entries are invited to the National Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park.
