National History Day
National History Day ® (NHD) is a nonprofit education organization based in College Park, Maryland. NHD offers a year-long academic program focused on historical research, interpretation, and creative expression for students in grades 6-12, culminating in a national competition. NHD works with affiliate programs across the U.S. and abroad to implement its programs at the local level and supports teachers through resources and programs.
Intern Responsibilities
Intern will work directly with the Communications Manager to support the growth of NHD’s traditional and digital communications. This includes:
- Preparing content for NHD’s four social media platforms.
- Writing newsletters and press releases for NHD programs and the National Contest.
- Tracking media coverage and assisting the Communications Manager with developing and pitching stories to regional and national media.
- Supporting legislative affairs efforts, including outreach and relationship cultivation with elected officials.
- Providing support during NHD’s National Contest week, including preparing content and assisting press and participants.
Intern Qualifications
- Experience leading projects, working in fast-paced environments, and engaging with
- Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Previous communications, legislative, or social media experience is a plus.
- You must be a student at the University of Maryland, College Park; Any major can apply.

- 10-15 hours per week.
- Extended Hours during the National Contest Week, Sunday, June 14 to Thursday, June 18, 2026.
