Judging Process
During the National History Day® (NHD) contest process, students in grades 6–12 conduct extensive research on topics related to an annual theme and present their findings as historical papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances, or websites. Students present their work to judges, who work in teams of three, to provide feedback on all students’ work and select projects to advance to the next level of the competition. Between contest levels, students are encouraged to revise their projects based on what they have learned and the feedback from the judges. NHD relies on consensus judging, which means that instead of giving entries numerical scores, judges rank the entries after discussion within the judging team.
